During the height of the Elven Empire, nothing more than wild animals populated the east. The noblest of these animals were the wolves. The hierarchy and order that the wolf packs held were considered by Elves to be the closest thing nature had to civilization. This respect, however, was not enough for the Elves to avoid conquering the lands. The east held to much promise, to many resources for it to be ignored. And to the Elves plotted an invasion, knowing full well there was nothing to stop them.
The Antivas, however, felt that the size and power of the Elven Empire had grown too large, and that it must be halted. Man had so far proven itself unable to meet the challenge. A new force was needed to balance out the Elves. But where would this new force come from was a question none could agree on. Iquiel, the Antiva of Forbidden Knowledge, proposed a race of undead to combat the Elves. Mequm, Antiva of Corruption, wanted to send astray a group of Elves (a task that he would later play in history). The others were neutral, not sure themselves of what to do.
Everything was in a deadlock until Tebog, Antiva of Chaos, spoke up.
“My fellow Antivas, why do we not turn some of the wolves into a race? They already act like Man and Elf, so why not turn them that way as well?”
None of the other Antivas could argue with his suggestion, which seemed perfectly reasonable for once. And so Iquiel dove into his books, looking for the correct ritual and spell to transform the wolves into man-like creatures. With it located, he headed down to the mortal world to do his work. Upon locating a particularly large pack, he began the ritual. Luring them into a circle he placed in the earth, he began to send a powerful burst of magic throughout. The wolves started to panic, but they could not move. Soon bloodcurdling howls could be heard as the wolves were brutally transformed into the Volk race.
Inquiel soon informed them of their new lives.
“You have been given the gift of consciousness. No longer subservient to your instincts, you are free to live and prosper into a powerful kingdom. All that we ask for in return is that you repel any attempts by Man or Elf to conquer these lands. They are yours and yours alone.”
The Volk curiously stared at this man, their freshly gained intelligence taking longer to process the information. Once they gained an understanding, however, they agreed. And so when the Elven Empire armies arrived, armies of the Volk, increased through Iquiel’s work, met them in combat. The battle was brought to a draw. The Elven Empire was halted, and a new race dedicated to battle was created. For the Antiva, nothing better could have arrived from the situation.
