The Sonon are a cat-like beast race that lives in the deserts on the eastern most part of the continent (Deserts of Salaton). The parts near the coast are more green and lively, but a majority of the region is desert broken up with the occasional oasis. The north, being close to the Volk, melds in grasslands and steppes. The Sonon themselves tend to have fur that is yellow in color, similar to a leopard. They are very lean and agile and are like all beast races capable of running on both four and two legs.
Living in the desert has prevented the Sonon from making any large and permanent political entities. Instead, they rely on living in nomadic groups that wander from oasis to oasis for water. The coast has some small towns, but not much. Occasionally, the Sonon will find themselves on the borders of either the Volk or the Abatar, and usually such meetings result in some kind of conflict. Some nomadic clans are also known to raid small towns on the borders or attack trade routes. This has caused much tension throughout the region bordering Abatar and the Volk.
The Sonon are famous for their survival abilities, and infamous for their stealth capabilities. The inherent agility and acrobatic skill they have makes them excellent thieves and/or archers. Most clans take advantage of this in one form of another, ranging from raiding towns to being hired as mercenaries. The nomadic clan aspect of their society makes them very loyal to their small clans, and a majority of what they do is for the improvement of their clans. It also gives them a strong sense of family and community. Tensions with the Abatar have made them suspicious of the human races, while the minimal contact with Elven races make them curiosities when they do come around. Yet, in a strange twist, the females of this race are prized among other races as exotic ‘pets’ of sorts, especially among the upper parts of Abatar society.
